TD adds Google virtual card numbers for Canadian shoppers

Thu, 23rd Apr 2026 (Today)

TD Bank Group has introduced Virtual Card Numbers through Google for eligible Visa credit card customers in Canada, becoming the first financial institution in the country to offer the feature within Google Chrome.

The service allows cardholders to generate a unique virtual number linked to their existing credit card when shopping online. The virtual number is used in place of the physical card details at checkout.

The functionality is available for purchases made through Google Chrome on desktop and mobile devices, as well as within supported mobile applications on Android and iOS.

Checkout flow

When a customer completes a purchase, the browser or app replaces the physical card number with a randomly generated virtual card number. The merchant then processes that virtual number in place of the actual card details.

The aim is to simplify online payments by reducing the need for users to enter card information at checkout manually.

It also aligns with broader efforts by payment providers to reduce friction in digital transactions across web and mobile environments.

Fraud protection

The system is designed to keep underlying payment credentials hidden from merchants during transactions.

By masking the primary card number, the virtual token reduces exposure of sensitive financial data in online environments. The approach is intended to reduce the risk of card details theft and misuse when merchant systems are compromised.

Security controls are implemented through tokenisation, in which a unique identifier is generated for each transaction rather than transmitting static card information.

Google integration

The feature is integrated directly into Google's mobile ecosystem, allowing eligible users to generate virtual cards without leaving the checkout process.

"TD cu "tomers have shown tremendous affinity for Google over the years, with many saving their card information in their Google account," said Meg McKee, Executive Vice President, Canadian Card Payments, Loyalty and Personal Lending, TD.

"Our goal is to increase security in the payment ecosystem by removing the need for customers to share credit card information online. This capability is another of the many ways TD cardholders in Canada can access payment solutions that meet their evolving needs," McKee said.

Kirsten Rasanen, Managing Director, Global Partnerships, Google Payments, said the arrangement reflects a broader shift in the Canadian payments market.

"This collaboration with TD marks an important step forward in driving innovation in the Canadian payments landscape," Rasanen said.

"Bringing the security and convenience of Virtual Cards to Chrome and Android users is a testament to our shared commitment to providing Canadians with cutting-edge payment solutions," she added.

Eligible cards

The rollout covers a range of Visa credit products issued by TD, including cashback, travel, rewards and co-branded Aeroplan cards.

Eligible products include TD Cash Back Visa Infinite, TD Cash Back Visa, TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite, TD Aeroplan Visa Platinum Credit Card, TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege Credit Card, TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite, TD Platinum Travel Visa, TD Rewards Visa, TD Low Rate Visa and TD US Dollar Visa.

The feature is automatically available to eligible cardholders using supported Google platforms, with no separate application required.

Market context

The launch reflects growing integration between banks and large technology platforms in the payments space, particularly as digital wallets and tokenised payment systems become more widely adopted.

It also highlights the growing role of browser-based payment systems in reducing friction during online checkout, especially in retail, travel, and subscription services.

TD Bank Group is among the largest financial institutions in North America, serving more than 28 million customers across personal banking, wealth management, wholesale banking and insurance.

The bank reports more than 13 million active mobile users across Canada and the United States, alongside total assets of approximately CAD $2.1 trillion.

The integration with Google adds another layer to its existing digital payment infrastructure, expanding the ways customers can complete online transactions without directly exposing card credentials to merchants.
