PureVPN launches all-in-one mobile app to combat alert fatigue
PureVPN has introduced a security suite that brings together several cybersecurity tools into a single mobile app, aimed at reducing the risks created when consumers use fragmented security applications. The service integrates a VPN, Password Manager, Dark Web Monitoring, and Tracker Blocking under one subscription, with pricing starting at USD $1.49 per month.
Fragmented tools
Recent findings from a study conducted alongside Ontario Tech University and CQR Cybersecurity suggest that using separate cybersecurity tools can leave gaps in defence. The research, titled "The Cost of Fragmentation: Measuring Time, Spend and Risk in Personal Cybersecurity Tool Stacks," highlights that 38% of modern cyberattacks exploit stolen credentials and exposed connections resulting from non-integrated security tools.
The study also found that 44% of users receive overlapping alerts from various security apps, while 38% admit to ignoring them due to alert fatigue. Additionally, between 29% and 34% of respondents said they sometimes leave essential tools disabled or miss out on paying for features, which can inadvertently weaken their digital security.
Alert fatigue
The problem of alert fatigue is particularly acute during times of heightened online shopping activity, such as Black Friday. Multiple standalone security apps can send repeated, sometimes conflicting warnings. This barrage of notifications can drive consumers to turn off protection features, increasing their vulnerability to attacks, particularly man-in-the-middle attacks that intercept data transfers.
The study found that the average consumer manages 3.4 different security apps and spends up to 27 hours annually maintaining them. While each app is supposed to enhance protection, their lack of integration can lead to confusion and make users less likely to act on genuine threats.
Unified approach
PureVPN's security suite addresses this fragmentation by coordinating key digital protections. The integrated Password Manager and VPN combination ensures that sensitive information, such as passwords and credit card details, is secured, even during automatic form fills, as it travels over an encrypted connection.
Additionally, the service includes a tracker and ad-blocker designed to prevent advertisers and malicious script operators from building shopping profiles. The unified dashboard eliminates the need to manage and pay for multiple subscriptions, which the study suggests could cost users as much as USD $850 annually in redundant software.
Mobile rollout
The new suite is available to both Android and iOS users. PureVPN describes the product rollout as a response to rising cybercrime rates and the demands of complex digital lives.
"Security isn't about how many tools you have, it's about how well they work together when it matters," said Ali Khan, Head of Product, PureVPN.
"PureVPN's Unified Security Suite is designed around reality: one app, total protection, no wasted motion," said Khan.
